TIKTOK TAKEOVER

TIK TOK TAKEOVER

TikTok is now one the world’s most popular social media apps, with an estimated one billion active users worldwide and millions of videos being uploaded everyday. While the app is popular among all age groups, it’s influence among young adults in society seems to be on the rise.
Young adults have been particularly drawn to the app’s Gen Z-centric content, which is dominated by music, dancing, and humor. The app has become a platform for creators to showcase their talents and connect with a wide audience, possibly leading to fame and fortune for those lucky enough to go viral.

However, TikToks influence on young adults in society goes beyond entertainment. As the world becomes increasingly digital, the app has become a source of inspiration and information, shaping the way young adults perceive and interact with the world. Here are some ways TikTok influences young adults in society:

  1. Fashion and Beauty Trends

One of the biggest ways TikTok influences young adults in society is through fashion and beauty trends. Influencers on the app regularly share their favorite makeup techniques, hair hacks, and skincare routines, inspiring viewers to try them at home. This has led to the “TikTok effect” where certain products or styles go viral on the app, causing them to sell out in stores. When debating fashion and beauty trends with my good friend Darya Popova, she mentions TikTok has given her “a way to express who I am outside of school and my normal life. On TikTok, no one cares what I wear and if anything I get compliments which make my day”. Shortly after having the app for a while, Darya created a second account featuring her daily outfits and spreading inspiration for others on the platform. You could say she’s a mini influencer, but I’d never give her that satisfaction.

2. Social Justice and Activism

TikTok has also become a platform for social justice and activism among young adults. Users share educational videos on topics such as racism, sexual assault, and mental health, sparking conversations and making awareness. The app has also been a tool for organizing protests and rallies, as seen during the Black Lives Matter movement. It is easy to look past a lot of monumental social causes when young adults are wrapped up in their own social dilemmas. TikTok is able to join the outside world and social media. In an interview with senior Josh Augustine, he mentions “in all honesty, without TikTok I don’t know where I’d get my source of news.” While Josh warns us TikTok should never be a primary source for news and important world topics, it “opens eyes to realize that there are these problems and that we could do something about it even if we’re just high school students.”

3. Mental Health Awareness
Mental health has become a major topic on TikTok, with users sharing their struggles and offering support to those who may be going through similar experiences. Many creators on the app use their platforms to spread positivity and promote self-care, encouraging young adults to prioritize their mental health.

4. Body Positivity
TikTok has become a safe space for body positivity and acceptance among young adults. Users share their experiences with body shaming and promote inclusivity, challenging societal beauty standards. The app has also given rise to the body positivity movement, where creators encourage their viewers to love and embrace their bodies, regardless of shape or size.

In conclusion, TikTok has become a powerful platform for young adults to express themselves, connect with others, and promote important causes. Senior, Darya Popova, emphasized that TikTok, while its influence may be controversial, “there is no denying that it has had a significant impact on how young adults perceive and interact with the world.” As the app continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how it continues to shape the future.
