Senior Asma Mir tells us about her plans to become a neurosurgeon.
March 1, 2021
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?
A: I plan to pursue my career as a neurosurgeon with my major focus on neural science and neurodegenerative diseases.
Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO NEURAL SCIENCE? WHAT INTERESTS YOU ABOUT A CAREER LIKE THAT?
A: I have always been curious about how the brain functions but I didn’t commit to neural science until I lost a really close relative to brain cancer. From that day, I became determined to learn more about brain sciences. I also love researching about the brain such as how tumors and infections can cause the buildup of the cerebrospinal fluid inside the cavities of the ventricles. Moreover, I did a few internships where I became exposed to brain surgeries which helped me expand my knowledge even more. In the upcoming future, I hope that I will become a successful neurosurgeon and perform collaborative research.
Q: ARE THERE ANY MAJOR OBSTACLES YOU’VE FACED WHILE PURSUING THIS CAREER? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?
A: Once I turned 16 years old, I got a job so I could start saving up for college. Due to Coronavirus, my work closed down so I wasn’t able to earn as much money as I expected. When my work reopened, I was able to get back to it and start saving money again. Thankfully, I have saved a good amount of money for college and I plan to keep working to fund most of my education in the future as well.
Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN INCOMING SOPHOMORE?
A: I know that everything can be very overwhelming but just trust the process. Of course focus on your academics, but also don’t forget to enjoy the whole high school experience. Join extracurricular activities, clubs and explore around to find your best interests. P.S. Check out the pool on the roof!
