With the holiday season approaching, it’s easy to become excited about the usual celebrations. But due to these challenging times, our everyday lives including the holidays, have changed. Covid 19 has brought many challenging factors into our world and we need to remember to be cautious and safe every day. Hundreds and thousands of lives lost, thousands of new cases everyday, hospitals on the verge of collapse- this isn’t something to be taken lightly.
Now, this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t have fun and celebrate holidays like every other year, but when you are celebrating don’t forget how important it is to remain safe. Canada showed an incredible increase in Covid cases as Canada “has gone from diagnosing more than 2,000 cases per day in mid-October to an average of 4,776 cases daily in the past week” after their Thanksgiving holiday (Politico).
It is now important that us Americans learn from this, especially as cases have risen dramatically already in the past few weeks. These upcoming holidays are especially important to American culture and Christianity but millions of Americans have already had to celebrate their significant holidays in smaller more intimate ways for the better for the nation. Senior Aribah Khan says, “Ramadan is a holy month where we make the effort to go to the mosque on a daily basis to get closer to people and our faith and spend Eid going to each other’s homes , but this time we knew we had to stay home for a reason bigger than just us.”
This year let’s remember those we love and hope to next year. And if we really do, let’s get a smaller turkey for just the family and kick off the holiday season! Don’t worry, there will still be just as much food for you at the table!
